There is a trap door in front of the Fireplace that leads to the basement where you will find [[Swamp Rat]]s and stores of guard uniforms and weapons. [[Sir Tenshin]] in [[Shoushi]] will reward for investigating and bringing back evidence. However, the "farmer" will be angry with you if you enter the trap door but that won't stop him from selling stuff to you.
