Portal Year (P.Y., PY) is the system of year numbering used by Isparians on Dereth. 0 P.Y. is marked with the death of The One Queen. The game opened up in Leafcull, 10 P.Y. (November 1999). Therefore, the "zero year" is established at 1989.

Note that the portal year (and the months and dates) displayed on the in-game calendar is incorrect. The original concept was that a full year (in terms of months) would pass in a single real world month. This may be in part because the developers wanted short Derethian days, so players who can only play in the evening aren't always playing in a dark game world, for example. Thus, each month of real world time is a full year in the incorrect in-game calender.

However, in lore terms one year in the real world and one year in Dereth are equal. For example, there are only four seasons per real world year instead of per real world month. Isparians age at the same rate as humans on earth. And most importantly, whenever the PY is referenced in lore, it is writen in the correct year (For example 1999 = PY 10, 2008 = PY 19). The calendar panel has not been corrected since it is a minor issue, and fixing it would likely interfere with the day/night system. For the correct Portal Years and Roulean months as they correspond to the patches and real world dates, see Patches.
Note that the portal year (and the months and dates) displayed on the in-game calendar is incorrect. For more information, see Continuity: In-Game Calendar. To convert between real world months/years and Portal Years, see Patches.

The in game date and can be viewed at the top of the Map Panel. On the map panel, the date is displayed in the following format: Month Day of Month, Year, e.g. Snowreap 1, 10 P.Y. Some areas such as Graveyard have spawns and NPCs that change depending on the time of day.

There are 16 time periods in a day.[1][2][3] There are 6 days in a week.[3] There are 360 days in 1 year.[3] There are 12 months in 1 year.[1][2] If we assume each month has the same length, there are 30 days in a month, and each month is exactly 5 weeks long.

In real world time, each in game day lasts 2 hours and 7 minutes.[4] Therefore, each individual time period lasts approximately 8 minutes. And each in game week lasts 14 hours and 49 minutes.

Roulea had spanned much of Ispar, and both the Old Roulean language and system of time had been used by traders on Ispar as a common form of communication. When Isparians of various heritage groups found themselves on Dereth, this language and system of time became the standard for everyone.[1][2]
