I believe that technically you do not die when you pull the skull lever. I forgot to check my death count, but 1) you don't leave a corpse, 2) your spells are not removed, 3) there is no green death message, and 4) you are not sent to your own lifestone, but instead to a lifestone outside Zaikhal.
