What exactly does 1 AL do?

Question Title: What exactly does 1 AL do?
Category: Items
Question: I've read all the stuff about how unparalleled is 2X the AL of the armor piece against that particular attack type, and all that other stuff.
But what exactly does 1 AL do? Does 1 point of armor do the same thing always, like 1 armor reduces damage by .5% or .1 hit points per hit or does the effect of 1 armor point diminish the higher the AL is?
I'm just curious how much difference there would be between like 150 AL and 160 AL

Answer: 1 AL wouldn't do a whole lot. =)

The mapping of AL to damage protected against is not a linear relation. While point increases at lower levels are more noticable, there are dimineshing returns at higher AL levels.
