Forum:Changes to gallery tag
Yesterday a new version of the <gallery> tag was rolled out Wikia wide. Unfortunately because this uses an existing tag and changes behavior in several important ways a lot of pages don't appear as we intended them. This mismatch may be fixed or it may not, I'm waiting to see what response we get before actually changing anything (since we use galleries on thousands of pages whatever workaround/fix we need to implement I'd like to only do once). The complete syntax hasn't been made available yet either but once it has I'll update our local help page to reflect the changes. --Tlosk talk contr 21:46, March 26, 2010 (UTC)
I haven't gotten any acknowledgment of our concerns so I tracked down the new css selectors and have figured out how to get the old appearance back for monobook. I'm working on improving the monaco appearance as well.
One nice thing is that now if you don't specify the perrow instead of defaulting to 4 images per row it now adjusts to display as many images per row as will fit given the size of your browser window.
You are no longer able to specify both widths and heights, only widths, which means we can only have square cells.
By default the images and captions will align to the left, this can be changed by adding
align="center"
oralign="right"
to the opening gallery tag.It's also now possible to have an image link to an arbitrary page rather than to the image page (though there probably wouldn't be many situations where we'd use that in a gallery setting).
The documentation is getting filled in here.
