Forum:Portal.dat icons
After Sucamarto posted on Turbine's forums on the lack of a portal.dat image for patch pages I dug up a collation utility I made over a year ago but never finished up and completed it. I've started filling in old patch pages, though I've had trouble extracting a small number of low color icons that use a different format. Once I get it sorted I'll update any existing images and finish the rest up (I got up to around ToD 2005 so far).
The false backcolor isn't true black (it's off by a single tick, so you can floodfill them to remove it. But they also have the hex ids for identification if you need to pull out an original.
Great work :)
I was wondering, do you think it would be useful to something like what Sucamarto used to do, where the portal.dat icons are displayed and the in-game use of them is displayed below? Example: http://www.dereth.info/?ind=portal_dat&op=viewarchive&i=September2008. And on our listings, the in-game icons would use {{Icon}} so they would redirect to their page. Or is this unnecessary as most of the icons would be on the patch page anyway?

I thought about it, in addition to what you said, about the items usually being on the same patch page (or the next), I also realized that since that time icons have been reused a lot more so some would have multiple items to link to and it would probably be more hassle than it's worth for old pages though it might be useful for new patches.
I figured out the format of the missing icons but as I started to go through them there's a lot more than I realized so I'm going to take some time to automate it more fully.
I'll make a zip of all the icons and post a download link once I get them all done for anyone that might want a copy of the set.
This is a zip of the additional icons I was able to extract (1,863 icons, 2.4MB).
Wow!, the contents of that .zip are incredible and annoying at the same time; there are tons of icons there that I needed for various quest pages and couldn't find them using the icon browser. Why are there so many icons in a different format from the others just out of interest?
And I love your additions to the quest pages; I made an effort to use Sucamarto's .dats when I put the icons on the pages.

I know the feeling, I've tried many times in the past to get these and really banged my head against the wall. There's still a handful I haven't found, I'm going to dig up some old portal.dats I have archived on a DVD somewhere and check previous versions since they might have been removed.
I would change "Icon" to "Icon(s)" so when, for example, we have a long segment that is just the color/dye variations, we don't need to list every one. Example below.

EDIT:
Also, I think perhaps we should only list the first item introduced which uses the icon. In your example below, you have 6487 as Dark Remoran Fin and Altered Dark Remoran Fin, when the altered version was actually introduced 2 years later. While this example icon only has two uses, there are other icons which get recycled over and over and it wouldn't be that useful, IMO, to list every item that uses that icon.
