Time Storm
It was early in the day when I had my first clue that something was very wrong in Dereth, but I did not recognize what until too late. I realize that I could not have known the full magnitude of what was coming at that time, but logic and facts are often no match for the power of guilt. I feel like, somehow, I should have been able to warn others of the coming storm. A storm that would cost hundreds of lives, and cast hundreds more into bitter poverty, including myself and my friends.
The sound of a flock of geese screaming wildly in the distance snapped me out of my sleepy daze, and I looked up into the crowd, momentarily disoriented. The noise of conversation that always filled a busy town like Qalaba'r sounded muffled in my ears, and the crowd's movement seemed to slow for an instant as I opened my eyes. The feeling was gone by the time I was fully conscious, and I dismissed it, rising to my feet to leave. The ash-choked sun had barely moved in the sky, but it felt like I had been sitting there for hours, lost in thought. My white celdon gleamed in the sun, but it felt like ice through the clothes underneath.
I pulled out my staff and was about to recall to my cabin near Arwic, when a voice in my head stopped me. It was a stranger's voice, carried across the mana currents of the world and into my mind. Its words baffled me.
