What is a missile 'misfire'?

Question Title: What is a missile 'misfire'?
Category: Combat
Question: When firing a bow, I sometimes connect and do damage; I sometimes connect, but the creature avoids the hit; I sometimes fire into the hill side. Every once in a blue moon, I get a message saying that my missile attack has 'misfired', and this is distinctly different from all the above situations. What does it mean when a missile attack 'misfires'?

Answer: Typically this message refers to the arrow being created inside something else, not being able to do anything, and thus "misfiring".

You'll see it most often if you're firing into a wall/door or the side of a cliff.
